Bed Bugs In The Middle Of A Trip - How To Stop Dragging Them Along?

*There was already a topic on bed bugs, but more on how to avoid them (too late) and how to deal with them when you come back home (too early), so hopefully we're not repeating anything unnecessarily :)*

Sorry you guys are having to deal with this :( I'd never thought of ironing items as the heat treatment - what a great idea! As far as the itching goes, I've never had much luck with hydrocortisone cream either. I had a reaction to a medication recently and ended up with hives head to toe, and the only thing that helped the itching was cold packs. I filled zip lock bags with crushed ice and placed them over the worst areas and it helped a lot. The pathways to the brain that the sensations of itching and cold follow are the same, so it's like they're both competing to get processed by the brain and the sensation of cold wins out. Of course it's only temporary relief, but with 119 bites it might be worth a try. And if you have something like a towel between the ice (or anything frozen) and your skin you can leave it on much longer. I've also read that applying a baking soda paste to bug bites can relieve itching. I've never tried it, but just a thought. Sending best of luck wishes that the washing, ironing, freezing ect. does the trick :)

They stayed on her for several weeks, if I recall, possibly up to a month though they weren't very itchy. She took some allergy meds to keep any potential swelling down, and then just used tiger balm here and there (even if it didn't help, that stuff smells lovely)

Yup. And on me - not even one, and I'm the person to have huge, hard bubbles from mosquito bites. That's why we're considering a doctor's consultation if it doesn't go away o_O How long did it stay on your partner? Was it also itchy as hell?

The exact number of bites (we have way too much time on our hands) is actually 118. That's "a bit" unsettling.

Also: I've tried inspecting and hair drying the beds in the new room (not really hoping to eradicate anything, but at least flush them out and see if there are any hiding here as well), but no results. It's probably a good sign.

Thank you! We already bought the anti-histamines (also in a hydrocortisone cream, special one for insect bites) as it got really, really bad. Nothing seems to be helpful for the itch and it gets almost unbearable and red... but maybe it's a matter of taking the medication for a longer time. We also bought some calcium, as it helps for mild allergies and probably doesn't harm to add it to all the other stuff.

First off, if they are causing you a physical problem then pick up some anti-histamines. I always carry them with me since I have a whole whack of allergies, and they helped a little when my partner got bit last year. Similar to you guys, we found just 1 in our hostel and killed it, but soon after my partner had 5 or 6 bites. We went through all her things searching for more, as well as her bag, and were SUPER lucky we didn't have any further problems. Here is what I learned when we had to deal with them:

And what's the best treatment for the bites themselves? (fun fact: only one of us has them)

We're trying to use Tiger Balm and Hydrocortisone, but it got so bad that it's probably time for anti-histamines :/

Do you know what's the best way to deal with that? Do we even have any options other than strongly hoping that we're leaving all of them here? (we really don't want to cause our next hosts any trouble) We've considered using a hair dryer on everything we have, as this could be hot enough to kill them, but apparently it can also spread the eggs everywhere around.

The problem is - the bus leaves tomorrow, we can't really wash and tumble dry our clothes until then - and even if, we've heard that they survive a wide range of temperatures, so probably a 40 degrees laundry won't help (on top of that, most of what we wear is meant for hand washing only). Aaand the bugs might also hide in our backpacks.

Alright, straight to the point: we've got bed bugs. Not sure if it's a full blown infestation, or just the beginning, as we turned our guesthouse bedroom upside down a couple of times and only found two of them strolling in the bedsheets. We're leaving tomorrow and we don't want to drag them with us - we're not sure if after changing the bedroom, throwing our clothes to the plastic bag and taking a shower we still have company, but it's probably safe to assume that it's not that easy.
